What Is Server-Side Tracking? The Solution for Marketers in an Era Where Half the Data Is Missing

The solution when conversion data goes missing as browsers and iOS increasingly block client-side tracking

July 18, 2026 7 min read

Many businesses have recently run into the same problem: actual sales and the sales reported in Facebook Ads Manager don't match at all. Some campaigns appear to have no conversions even though customers really bought. The main cause is that browsers and iOS increasingly block client-side tracking, and server-side tracking is the answer many businesses are turning to.

What is server-side tracking?

Normally, tracking users on a website (client-side tracking) works through JavaScript code running in the user's browser, such as the Facebook Pixel or Google Analytics. But this method is easily blocked by ad blockers, browser privacy settings (such as Safari ITP) and various anti-tracking plug-ins.

Server-side tracking moves the process of sending event data to your own server first, which then forwards it to ad platforms such as Facebook or Google from the server side, instead of sending it directly from the user's browser. The data is much less likely to be blocked, and the business has more control over data quality.

Why client-side tracking is no longer enough

Several privacy changes happening at once make client-side tracking leak more data every year: Safari and Firefox block third-party cookies by default, iOS has restricted cross-app tracking since version 14.5, many users install ad blockers, and some browsers automatically block well-known tracking scripts.

The result is that businesses can lose as much as 20–30% of their conversion data. Ad platform algorithms learn the wrong lessons, budgets are allocated to less accurate audiences, and the reports executives see don't reflect reality.

How server-side tracking works

The most widespread approach is to set up a server-side container through Google Tag Manager Server-Side. Event data from the website is sent first to the business's own server (usually on a subdomain of its own domain, such as sgtm.markettung.com). The server then processes and cleans the data and forwards it to destinations such as the Facebook Conversions API or the Google Analytics 4 Measurement Protocol.

A key advantage is that data sent from the server is seen as more trustworthy, because it comes from the business's own domain rather than a third-party script browsers recognise as a tracker. It also lets the business enrich the data, for example with real order values from the back-end system, before sending it to ad platforms, making conversion data far more accurate.

Server-side tracking and data privacy

It's important to understand that server-side tracking is not a way around data protection laws. Businesses still need to obtain user consent as usual through a consent management platform and comply strictly with the PDPA or GDPR. What changes is that the data is sent through a more reliable channel, not that data is collected without permission.

Getting started with server-side tracking

  1. Set up a server-side container in Google Tag Manager and connect it to cloud hosting such as Google Cloud Run
  2. Set up a custom subdomain so data is sent through your own domain, increasing its trustworthiness
  3. Connect the Conversions API for Facebook, and the Measurement Protocol for Google Analytics 4
  4. Test data quality using the Test Events tool to compare data before and after going server-side
  5. Monitor results continuously such as the Event Match Quality score Facebook reports

Summary

Server-side tracking restructures your measurement so it holds up against data blocking that gets more severe every year. Ad platforms see more complete conversion data, algorithms work more accurately and ad budgets are used more efficiently. If you've wondered why your actual sales and ad reports don't match, this may be the place to start. The Markettung team is ready to audit and set up server-side tracking for your business.
